Property Taxes
How Property Taxes Work in Magrath
In Magrath, property taxes are collected by the Town to fund local services and infrastructure. Each year, properties are assessed to determine their market value as of July 1 of the previous year. This assessed value is used to calculate property taxes.
Your property tax bill is made up of several components:
-
Municipal tax rate – funds local services such as roads, water and wastewater systems, fire protection, parks, and community programs.
-
Education property tax – collected by the municipality on behalf of the Province of Alberta to support public education.
-
Other requisitions – may include services such as policing, seniors housing, and solid waste management, depending on the community.
Tax rates can change each year based on the town's budget, overall property assessments, and provincial requisitions. An increase in your tax bill does not always mean your property value has risen; it may reflect changes in tax rates or additional requisitions.
Property owners will receive their tax notice in May and are responsible for paying their taxes by the June 30th. Late payments are subject to penalties as outlined in municipal bylaws.
