LEAD LEVEL IN MAGRATH

Town of Magrath • November 11, 2019

There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about lead levels in municipal water systems. The Maximum Acceptable Concentration (MAC) for lead set by Health Canada is 0.005 mg/L. These levels are tested every year by our water plant operators and the latest MAC figure for the Town of Magrath is 0.00030 which is far below this government standard. There are no lead pipes in the Town’s distribution system so far as we are aware. We wanted the community to be aware in case some of you were interested. In this regard, it should be mentioned that there may be some minor quantities of lead associated with lead solder used in residential and commercial copper piping, but these amounts should be negligible. If you do, however, find lead piping in your home or in your private line connecting to the Town’s water system, you should seriously consider getting it replaced. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Town office.

The Town has been hard at work tackling the invasive goldfish in our storm water pond, and we’ve made real progress! Over the past 3 days, in the first of 2 pesticide applications that will be performed, the Town’s staff have removed more than 64,000 (and counting!) goldfish totalling 570kg. As part of the licensing process, the fish must be counted and properly disposed of. While it may seem unusual to tally up tens of thousands of goldfish, this step is important for environmental reporting and accountability. We again want to remind residents that although goldfish look harmless in an aquarium, goldfish in our storm water system grow quickly, upset the natural balance, and put local ecosystems at risk. Goldfish can spawn as much as once per month during the spring and summer and unchecked a population of goldfish can grow exponentially. Thank you for your patience as this work continues.
