Garbage Collection

Following are some general guidelines for the regular collection of waste at all residences, businesses and institutions in the Town of Magrath effective January 1, 2012:  “Waste” will be considered any discarded refuse including, but not limited to, such items as dry waste, food waste, and construction waste generated by residential, commercial or industrial properties.  All waste must be bagged and securely tied.  Bags may then be placed at the edge of the street or in a waste receptacle.

1. The Town of Magrath will collect waste weekly commencing at 8:00 A.M. according to the following schedule :

Tuesday: All residential pickups in the area between the east side of 1st Street West (Main Street) to the eastern Town boundary and all commercial, institutionand large container pick-ups throughout the Town of Magrath that are scheduled for pickup two times per week.

Thursday: All residential pick-ups in the area between the west side of 1st Street West (Main Street to the Town’s western boundary.

Friday: All commercial, institution and large container pickups throughout the Town of Magrath.

If a scheduled pick-up falls upon a statutory holiday, notification of the waste collection schedule will be advertised on the Town of Magrath website.

2. Fees for waste collection will be included on the bi-monthly utility bills at a rate reviewed by council annually.  Any utility amounts unpaid at March 1st of each year will be transferred to taxes and included in the annual notice of assessment.

3. Every residence, business or institution on their collection day shall place the collectable waste at the street edge or curb for pickup and ensure that there is nothing that would obstruct the pickup of their waste or injure the Town staff that collects it.  If a residence does not follow these guidelines, garbage will not be picked up on that day or any other day of the week, and will only be picked up on the next scheduled collection day if it is consistent with these guidelines.

4. Waste is only to be set out for pickup the morning of scheduled collection to avoid access by animals or wind and must be well-secured.

Collectable Waste

Collectable waste in receptacles or bags shall not exceed 40 pounds, and there is a residential limit of 5 such bags or receptacles per household.  Waste shall not include: automobile bodies, trees, manure, dead animals, waste from lawns and gardens, any object that does not fit into a common household garbage bag or refuse receptacle, dangerous or hazardous waste, concrete, soil or cardboard.
